Solar PV
Solar PV works by capturing the sun’s energy using photovoltaic cells. These solar cells don’t need direct sunlight to work. They can still generate some electricity on a cloudy day or through Winter. They work by converting the sunlight into electricity. Solar can be used to run household appliances and lighting. Features include:
- Cutting your electricity bills
- Get paid for the electricity you generate with the UK government’s Renewable Heat Incentive schemes
- Renewable energy cuts your carbon footprint
- Power generation is silent and unintrusive
- Requires minimal maintenance
Sunlight is free so after your initial installation costs you can reap the benefits. With the UK government’s renewable heat incentive payments alongside the cut in fuel bills using PV panels, you can receive an excellent return on your investment. Up to 10% per year for 20 years!
Providing you have a southerly-facing roof or garden with the space available to install Solar PV panels, you can gain from free electricity alongside some great investment returns.
Solar PV installations also benefit from buy-back tariffs, so for every kWh you don’t use and send to the grid – your energy provider pays you for this.
How Does Solar Pv Work?
Solar PV panels work using a combination of solar cells made from layers of semi-conducting material, typically silicon. When sunlight shines on the panels it creates an electric field across the layers. The stronger the sunshine, the more electricity is produced. Groups of cells are mounted together in panels or modules that can be mounted on your roof, on A-Frames on flat roofs or on the ground.
The power of a Solar PV cell is measured in kilowatts peak (kWp). That is the rate at which it generates energy at the panels peak performance in full direct sunlight in the height of summer. Solar PV cells come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Most Solar PV systems are made up of panels that fit on top of an existing roof, but you can also fit smaller solar tiles with a more costly route. These are usually less effective as they do not collect as much solar energy!
To benefit from peak performance, Solar PV panels are usually advisable to install in a southerly direction.
